Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
233 PM PDT Fri Aug 1 2025
...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM...
.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 231 PM PDT Fri Aug 1 2025
- Deep marine layer with morning coastal drizzle.
- Gusty winds Sunday and Monday afternoon and evening. Highest
winds along the coast, Altamont Pass, Salinas Valley, and other
typical summer windy spots.
- Quieter weather restored after Monday with a warming trend into
late week.

.SHORT TERM...
Issued at 231 PM PDT Fri Aug 1 2025 (This evening through
Saturday)
Afternoon satellite shows another sunny day across the vast
majority of our service area. Temps as of 2 pm are generally
running a few degrees cooler than this time yesterday with Sonoma
bucking that trend and running a couple degrees warmer. Since this
is generally a broken record, look for the marine layer to
reestablish tonight with mist and drizzle along the coast and in
patchy areas around the Bay. And if you like the weather today,
you need only wait until tomorrow. The pattern is not having a
substantial change between today and tomorrow.
&&
.LONG TERM...
Issued at 231 PM PDT Fri Aug 1 2025 (Saturday night through next
Thursday)
We`ll start to see a bit of a change as we get to the second half
of the weekend, as a weak system tries to slide through the area.
This area of low pressure will interact with high pressure on
either side, tightening the surface pressure gradient and yielding
some gusty afternoon/evening winds for Sunday and Monday. Right
now it looks like the strongest winds will be between Point Arena
and Point Reyes and again along the Big Sur coast. These winds
will try to push into gales, but there is uncertainty on that. On
land, look for breezy beaches and coastal areas, coastal gaps like
the Petaluma and San Bruno Gaps, then going farther inland,
Altamont Pass and other typical windy haunts. High pressure is
forecast to build back into the area starting Tuesday, which will
yield a warming trend.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1216 PM PDT Fri Aug 1 2025
Quiet and VFR conditions for interior locations, while coastal
sites are struggling to clear the stratus leaving them with,
with MVFR cigs. Expect this to hold through the afternoon and early
evening hours, which is when stratus will start to seep into some of
the valleys. MVFR to perhaps IFR cigs are expected again tonight at
most sites, though they may not arrive until early Saturday morning
just before sunrise. The forecast will rinse and repeat, with
stratus retreating to the coast by mid to late morning.
Vicinity of SFO...Stratus has eroded over the eastern side of the
range ring, including San Francisco Bay, while the western side
remains socked in with stratus. Will likely continue to see clouds
of FEW015 through the afternoon, leaving us with a period of VFR
conditions. Stratus is expected to return this evening, perhaps as
early as 3Z which is where we hinted at that possibility. The more
likely scenario, based on the latest guidance, is closer to 5-7Z
with conditions filling in shortly after that. Clearing is expected
to begin mid tomorrow morning, with VFR returning by late morning or
early afternoon. Gusty westerly winds are expected each afternoon
and evening, with gusts up to 20-25kt.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Well, stratus remains around MOnterey Bay
and has cleared from KSNS. This should likely hold through the rest
of the afternoon with stratus quickly returning this evening,
especially for KMRY if it actually stays scattered. Look
for MVFR and IFR cigs to return tonight and for conditions starting
to improve by mid to late morning.

.MARINE...
(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 952 AM PDT Fri Aug 1 2025
Moderate to strong northwesterly breezes will prevail with
widespread near-gale to gale force gusts on Sunday and Monday.
Seas will remain moderate to rough through Tuesday.
